For students, workers, and everyone in between who find themselves lost in an endless sea of online content, Green Juice is a screentime tracking app that provides accountability and goal setting. Unlike your phone’s built-in Focus Mode or Digital Wellbeing tools, Green Juice not only provides screentime data, but offers effective solutions to the problem, such as accountability and stricter app timers.

Context

Society’s increased dependence on tech has led to a significant number of children and adults reporting symptoms of tech addiction.

Excessive tech usage is known to lead to reduced mental and physical health, impaired social skills, and an increased risk of substance abuse.

The Problem

Current solutions for screentime addiction, such as Digital Wellbeing for Android and Focus Mode for iPhone, are uncompelling and easily disabled. They lack an immediate and tangible incentive for maintaining a healthier, reduced screentime, and fail to support the user through the challenges of reducing bad tech habits.

Biggest Challenges

Through user research, I’ve concluded that the biggest hurdles users face when trying to overcome tech addiction are:

  • Lack of support - It’s extremely challenging to reduce your screentime when your job and social life require you to continuously monitor your devices.

  • The slippery slope of social media usage - Many social media apps are specifically engineered to keep you scrolling for as much time as possible. Trying to mindfully engage with apps such as TikTok or Instagram can feel like an uphill battle.

  • Lack of immediate, tangible incentive - Peeling yourself away from distracting apps can take a lot of discipline, as well as an understanding of the difference between short-term vs. long-term gratification. In the moment, the tech-induced dopamine rush often overrides your desire to be in the moment.

  • Lack of clearly defined goals - Many people may not have a clear understanding of their habits, and what they can do to improve.

The Solution

Green Juice offers in-depth screentime analytics to help you set goals tailored to your specific needs and concerns. Set goals automatically or manually and receive personalized suggestions based on your screentime data. Connect with an accountability partner through the app or invite a friend to join your journey. Set shared goals or simply support each other through wins and challenges. Users will tackle screentime addiction by fostering a community built on shared goals and accountability, helping us achieve healthier screen habits together.

User Research

In November 2024, we conducted 16 individual user interviews, in order to determine the common struggles and needs of tech users between the ages of 20 and 40.

Through our research, we determined one main character archetype to guide us through the development process:
